WHAT ARE THEY SAYING NOW?

Do the comments below, made by elected officials after the November 15 election,  align with 75% approval to study amalgamation region-wide?  Do they signal a community leader who is ready and willing  to work and cooperate with  their counterparts in the region?   Do they align with the promises/positions made by these candidates pre-election?  Are tendencies towards denial, obfuscation, obstruction and even great leadership emerging?  We'll be tracking statements on this page.

David Screech, View Royal Mayor

Alice Finall, Steve Price & Ryan Windsor, North Saanich, Sidney & Central Saanich Mayors
"None of the new mayors elected said they were surprised by the result".  …. "Price and Finall weren’t in favour of Windsor’s idea about a committee on amalgamation through the Peninsula’s tri-municipal meeting process".  November 26, 2014  Read more

Richard Atwell, Saanich Mayor

“There are additional cost-savings to be had at the CRD level, but I’ve heard (amalgamation) won’t necessarily save money. ... The challenge is to retain the personal connection with residents. You don’t want to lose that balance.” November 21, 2014.  Read more.

Barb Desjardins, Esquimalt Mayor
"From Esquimalt's two amalgamation questions, Desjardins said she does not think citizens are fully supportive of the township losing its identity." November 18, 2014  Read more.

Lisa Helps, Victoria Mayor
"Lisa Helps said the next step is for the seven mayors whose municipalities voted in favour of some sort of amalgamation to sit down together and have a conversation, and to also meet with Minister Oakes." November 18, 2014  Read more.
