ABOUT AMALGAMATION YES
Amalgamation Yes is a grass roots movement of residents who seek to reduce the number of municipalities within Greater Victoria.. We began as a myriad of independent discussion groups from across the region seeking change to our regional governance structure. As we became aware of the wide community of interest, our groups merged. This ultimately lead to the formation of the Capital Region Municipal Amalgamation Society, a provincially incorporated non-profit society.
We are a non-partisan, non-profit organization dedicated to bringing about a referendum on the issue of municipal amalgamation in the Capital Region District (CRD). We are convinced that the current fragmented local governance model, consisting of 13 separate municipalities, is not the most effective means of governing the region. We also believe that only through citizen advocacy will any change in local governance occur. We do not support any particular model of amalgamation, but we do believe that fewer municipal governments will better position the region to face current and future challenges.
Our immediate goal was to bring about a non-binding referendum in conjunction with the municipal election, on November 15, 2014. The subsequent 75% positive vote provided the (then) BC Minister of Community, Sport & Cultural Development with a public mandate upon which to order an in depth study into municipal amalgamation models, conduct public hearings and present options, upon which a second binding referendum could be held in 2018. See Amalgamation Flow Chart for more details.
