FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: (September 6th, 2013)
Over 669 sign Petition at Saanich Fair
669 people signed the petition on the weekend at the Saanich fair, August 31st to September 2nd , which asks that all municipalities and townships in the Capital Regional District put the amalgamation question on the ballot in November 2014. In addition 180 people have signed the petition on line.
The Petition says “We, the signatories below, request that Council of each municipality or township place the following non-binding question on the 2014 Municipal Election Ballot. Are you in favour of reducing the number of municipalities in the Capital Regional District through amalgamation? (A positive result would motivate the Province of BC to commission an expert study to compare various municipal amalgamation models against the status quo and trigger community engagement about how we wish to be governed.)”
Amalgamation Yes will have a booth at the Luxton Fall Fair, September 13, 14 and 15th, and at various local fairs and farmers markets to give the public an opportunity to sign the petition.
The petition can be accessed online: http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/amalgamationyes/ and through the AmalgamationYes.ca website.
John Vickers spokesperson for Amalgamation Yes said, “We were extremely gratified by the public response to the petition. Many of the signatories told us that it was time for the public to vote on the issue of amalgamation. We will be working diligently to give the public an opportunity to tell politicians they can no longer ignore the right of the public to have its say.”
