FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: (September 2nd, 2014)
AmalgamationYes: Over 504 sign Petition at Saanich Fair
504 people signed the petition on the weekend at the Saanich fair, August 30th to September 1st, asking municipalities and townships in the Capital Regional District to put an amalgamation question on the ballot in November 2014. This is in the addition to the hundreds who signed in 2013.
The Petition says “We, the signatories below, request that Council of each municipality or township place the following non-binding question on the 2014 Municipal Election Ballot. Are you in favour of reducing the number of municipalities in the Capital Regional District through amalgamation?”
A positive result would motivate the Province of BC to commission an expert study to compare various municipal amalgamation models against the status quo and trigger community engagement about how we wish to be governed.
The petition can be accessed online: http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/amalgamationyes/ and through the AmalgamationYes.ca website.
John Vickers spokesperson for AmalgamationYes said, “Our booth was busy all weekend with people eager to sign the petition. The public continues to show its will to have the question on the ballot in November. We hope that the elected officials will heed the request of the public and place a question on the November municipal ballot.”
