Politicians won't risk the status they enjoy

Re: “Check New Zealand for a better way,” letter, Aug. 20.
This contributor is right on the money with his terse and brief assessment of the current political landscape here in the capital region.
What is not mentioned is the self-interest that comes into play with current elected officials and their bureaucracies; none want to risk their status for improvements that may change, for the better, the allocation of a scarce resource — taxpayer’s dollars.
It would seem that the possibility of improving the 3 Es (efficiency, economy, and effectiveness) of local government will remain an elusive goal as long as 13 municipalities simply can’t contemplate the potential for change. They can’t even manage the urban deer issue, let alone a sewage system!
