Open letter to the Mayors and Councils of View Royal, Colwood, North Saanich, Metchosin, Highlands and Sooke:
Dear Mayors and Councils,
During the past weeks, many of your municipal neighbours have agreed to place a non-binding referendum question concerning regional governance on the ballot.
Although the questions vary in wording, each is intended to capture public opinion for future policy direction. We are thankful that the municipalities of Victoria, Esquimalt, Oak Bay, Saanich, Central Saanich, Sidney and Langford are acknowledging the interest in their communities on this topic. They comprise 84% of population in the 13 CRD municipalities.
A relevant non-binding question, conceived without bias or preamble, needs to be put before your residents. Can you now deny this same opportunity to your electorate? We believe you have a duty to extend the same democratic franchise as 280,000 others now have in Greater Victoria.
There is still time to have a question on the November ballot.
Many of you have worked hard in the community over the years. This is an opportunity for you to leave a legacy of cooperation and democracy.
Yours sincerely,
Susan Jones,
