Mayors without borders part of problem

Re: “ ‘New era in terms of collaboration’; ‘There have been some big reset buttons,’” Dec. 5.
Mayors Lisa Helps and Nils Jensen are proposing a new era of collaboration called “mayors without borders.” The problem is we already have mayors without borders — it is called the Capital Regional District, run in large part by mayors.
In the recent referendum on amalgamation, citizens have asked that the province take a critical look at the state of local government. This should include the CRD, some members of which have called for a review of its effectiveness.
The type of regional government in place, in fact, has serious deficiencies, especially in the case of regions as large as greater Victoria.
Mayors without borders are part of the problem, not the solution. Greater Victoria needs government run by representatives elected directly to regional government and empowered to act on behalf of the larger constituency without divided loyalty.
