AmalgamationYes expects government to move forward on amalgamation vote
AmalgamationYes congratulations the new government and expects it to follow through on promises to support a vote on amalgamation.
Capital Region District, May 24th, 2013 – With the support of local MLAs in the lower island AmalgamationYes will be moving forward to request all municipalities to put the amalgamation question to the public.
John Vickers spokesperson for AmalgamationYes, “I look forward to this question being put to the people who have the right to decide how they should be governed.” ‘I believe that given the choice they will opt for a study into the amalgamation possibilities and impacts. I call on all levels of governments to allow the public to express its voice on the issue of amalgamation.”
Support of local government and provincial government is essential in ensuring the question is put on the ballot in November, 2014 to let the public decide.
A specific question to be put to the public has yet to be determined as has the will of local governments to place it on the ballot. The question would essentially ask the public to vote in favour of a further sturdy into the implications and models of amalgamation. This study would be funded by the provincial government. Once this study is complete a further vote would be necessary for the public to approve a model.

- During the election all parties where asked their position on amalgamation in the lower island. The question to all candidates and parties was: If your party forms the next government will you ensure that in the 2014 municipal elections, the citizens of the Capital Regional District are given the opportunity to vote on whether or not they support an investigation into municipal amalgamation?
- The BC liberal candidates supported the notion of a public discussion and subsequent vote if desired by the public.
- The party spoke about respectful relations between local and provincial governments and did not commit to a study on amalgamation.
