FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: (May 16th, 2013)
AmalgamationYes: moving forward on amalgamation vote
AmalgamationYes congratulates the new government and looks forward to working with officials to provide our communities with the opportunity to explore amalgamation of municipalities in the capital regional district.
AmalgamationYes will be moving forward to request that all municipalities put the amalgamation question to the public.
John Vickers spokesperson for AmalgamationYes, “I look forward to this question being put to the people who have the right to decide how they should be governed. I believe that given the choice, they will opt for a study into the amalgamation possibilities and impacts. I call on all levels of governments to allow the public to express its voice on the issue of amalgamation.”
During the election, local candidates were asked, “If your party forms the next government, will you ensure that in the 2014 municipal elections the citizens of the Capital Regional District are given the opportunity to vote on whether or not they support an investigation into municipal amalgamation?”
BC Liberal candidates supported the notion of a public discussion and subsequent vote if desired by the public. MLAs in the lower island region spoke even more positively of the need for a study.
Support of the provincial and municipal governments is essential in ensuring the question is put on the municipal ballots in November, 2014.
The specific question to be put to the public has yet to be determined, as has the will of local governments to place it on the ballot. The question would essentially ask if the voter is in favour of studying the implications of amalgamation and, through community consultation, proposing models. The provincial government would fund the study. Once this study is complete, a further vote would be necessary for the public to approve a specific amalgamation model.
It is time for public voices to be heard.
