FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: (June 25th, 2013)
Question on amalgamation proposed for municipalities to include on the ballot in November 2014
AmalgamationYes is encouraging all Municipalities to put a non-binding question on amalgamation to the people in their communities in November, 2014 when they go to the polls to elect their mayors and councilors.
Amalgamation Yes at its first strategic planning session established several action plans including public engagement, meeting with provincial and local politicians, fund raising, research and a recommendation for the question to be asked of the public. Volunteers will be working hard to follow up on these initiatives over the next 3-6 months.
John Vickers spokesperson for Amalgamation Yes said, “We hope that municipalities will allow the public to decide on whether they want to pursue the issue of amalgamation.. The question we are proposing to municipalities for the 2014 ballot is, ‘Are you in favour of reducing the number of municipalities in the CRD through amalgamation?’
If the public votes to proceed with exploring amalgamation then the province can be approached to fund an in-depth study to determine the ramifications of amalgamation and propose an effective model.
Amalgamation Yes is not proposing a specific amalgamation model but is convinced that the current structure is ineffective and needs to be changed. The appropriate number of municipalities needed for the region can best be decided through in-depth analysis and discussion. Once this analysis is complete, a further vote would be necessary for the public to approve a specific amalgamation model.
