FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: (June 11th, 2013)
Members and Public invited to First Annual General Meeting of the Society, June 15th, 2013
AmalgamationYes will hold its inaugural annual general meeting at 577 Pembroke St at 10:00 am on June 15th 2013.
AmalgamationYes is encouraging all members to attend the meeting to vote on a slate of officers. In order to hold office or vote, members had to be signed up 10 days prior to the meeting as indicated on the website.
Carole James MLA for Victoria-Beacon Hill will be the guest speaker. During the election Carole James and all NDP candidates in the lower island were supportive of a referendum on amalgamation being placed on the municipal ballot?
The public is invited. This will be an opportunity to understand the direction of the society, to see the progress to date and to sign up as new members.
Susan Jones current president of AmalgamationYes, “This is an important step for Amalgamation Yes, establishing itself as fully functioning society. Volunteers have been working hard over the last number of months to put in place the mechanisms for the society. Once the officers are in elected, the serious work of getting the question of amalgamation on the municipal ballot will continue in earnest”
John Vickers spokesperson for Amalgamation Yes. “We are a people's movement who believe residents across the region deserve the opportunity to express their view on a reduction in regional governance. Amalgamation Yes will be asking the support of politicians at all levels to put a non-binding question on amalgamation to the public during the 2014 municipal election.
Support of the provincial and municipal governments is essential in ensuring the question is put on the municipal ballots in November, 2014.
The question yet to be finalized but proposed by Amalgamation Yes is “Do you support the amalgamation of the municipality in which you live, with one or more of the other municipalities in the Greater Victoria Region?”
If the vote is a yes, then we would expect that the Provincial government to fund a study to explore the ramifications of amalgamation and propose an effective model. Once this study is complete, a further vote would be necessary for the public to approve a specific amalgamation model.
It is time for public voices to be heard.
