FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: (July 9th, 2013)

Colwood Council decides to put question on amalgamation for the November 2014 municipal ballot

On July 8th, 2014 Colwood Council approved Councilor Shari Lukens’s report on amalgamation.

The Council made the following decisions:
  • Place a question to the Colwood constituents via ballot during the 2014 municipal elections: if they would like to have Colwood explore amalgamation or integration with other capital region municipalities? Question to be determined.
  • Strike an internal task force to engage the public in this process and educate the public as to why the question is being asked.
  • Allocate $3K out of the 2013 budget for public engagement.

Susan Jones president of Amalgamation Yes, “This is a Milestone, a historic occasion to be celebrated. Congratulation to Colwood in showing leadership in their willingness to take the question of amalgamation to the public. Community engagement is essential to the democratic process.”

Amalgamation Yes will continue to encourage other municipalities in the region to follow the leadership of Colwood Council and allow the question of amalgamation on their November 2014 ballot.

“This has been over 50 years in the making.  We are pleased that Amalgamation Yes has played a part in moving the issue of amalgamation forward.” Said Susan Jones president of Amalgamation Yes.
