Greater Victoria needs regional leaders
Times Colonist Letters
November 7, 2014
Who, among the more than 200 candidates, will lead a region?
On Nov. 15, Greater Victorians will elect 91 mayors and councillors, some of whom want to serve the region as representatives on the Capital Regional District. The CRD is responsible for co-ordinating and directing regional matters on behalf of municipalities, such as sewage, transportation and regional growth strategies.
Recently we have witnessed the operations of the various councillors at the CRD and their inability to move forward with effective planning around issues such as sewage and waste management.
We are looking for leaders of the region — not people who have put their names forward for election to sit on the CRD, but people who have clearly articulated a vision for the region that includes decreasing over-governance and increasing quality of life as priority one.
Who is running a campaign based on a regional vision, as opposed to one simply focused on their own municipality?
The recent Angus Reid poll commissioned by AmalgamationYes confirmed that residents want reduced governance. The poll results informed politicians that the overwhelming majority believe that the CRD is broken and the 13 municipalities are no longer a good fit.
Your vote should be given to those candidates who understand and will remedy the over-governance, the complications created by 13 municipalities, and the dysfunction of the CRD.
Your vote should be given to candidates who commit to reforming and working to create a Greater Victoria that meets the needs of our community.
