Mayor-elect shouldn’t rush to judgment

Re: “Election was not vote for amalgamation,” letter, Nov. 25.
View Royal mayor-elect David Screech wrote thoughtfully on amalgamation in his letter.
I concur with his view that significant voter support for the questions posed in the Nov. 15 elections does not constitute a mandate for amalgamation. I also agree with his perspective that the task of elected officials is to find better ways to govern efficiently — and effectively, I might add — and that there are various ways to achieve this, possibly including amalgamation.
In fact, I found myself nodding in agreement throughout his letter. That is, until the very last line where Screech disappointingly revealed he has already concluded “absolutely” that amalgamation is not the solution.
This strikes me as an unfortunate stance by a newly elected official on a matter the electorate has indicated is vitally important to them and which is about to be comprehensively reviewed in a study led by the provincial government.
