FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: (June 16th, 2013)

Slate of Officers elected June 15th, 2013

The members of Amalgamation Yes elected a slate of officers at its inaugural general meeting on June 15th 2013.

The interim board reported on the efforts to establish the society to about 40 people in attendance. Susan Jones interim president thanked the volunteers and provided an overview of work done including the establishment of a society, a public meeting, dialogue with the media, and engagement with all candidates in May 14th provincial election.

John Vickers spokesperson for Amalgamation Yes said, “The goal is to place a non-binding question of amalgamation before the public in the November 2014 municipal election to determine the level of public support for a reduction in the number of municipal administrations across the region.”

Carole James MLA for Victoria-Beacon Hill guest speaker encouraged Amalgamation Yes to strive to over communicate with the public, to be creative in opportunities for public input and discussion, and to be flexible in considering different models of amalgamation.

Colwood Counselor Shari Lukens said she plans to release a report June 25th with preliminary research based on the talks with the provincial government, Amalgamation Yes and examination of existing models of amalgamation. She said, “Personally, I am not for or against amalgamation. What I am for is the public being involved in the process and giving us the mandate as to whether or not we can do this.”

Elected were,
  • Susan Jones, president; John Vickers, vice president; Earle Anthony, secretary, Sandy Menzies, treasurer.
  • Board members for two years, Jim Anderson, Marg Gardiner, Aaron Hall, and Tony Heemskerk, Jim Anderson
  • Board members for one year, James Legh, Colin Nielsen, Rod Phillips, and Bernard Von Schulmann
  • Nominating Committee, Richard Atwell (two years), Karen Harper (two years) and Gregg Meiklejohn (one year).

Susan Jones president of AmalgamationYes, “As a non partisan group of volunteers much has been done but much remains to be done to encourage politicians to put the question of amalgamation before the public. We will need the help of volunteers to engage the public in this important discussion.”
