Election doesn’t prove amalgamation support

Re: “Amalgamation not a done deal,” editorial, Nov. 20.
Contrary to what some might claim, the results of Nov. 15 elections do not show a majority support for amalgamation in the capital region.
For one, five of the communities did not even have an amalgamation question on their ballots.
Since none of the questions were binding, the electors did not have to think twice about the consequences of how they answered. I didn’t even answer the question when I cast my ballot.
The only way we can know if the people in the region want amalgamation is when there is a consistent, clear and straightforward question in all 13 municipalities, and equal public funding is designated to both the yes side and no side, similar to the B.C. single transferable vote referendum during the 2009 provincial election.
There is the possibility that the better known amalgamation would be, the less it would be liked, as was proven the case with the B.C. STV.
